Grizzlies Conley and Young Visit Adult Piano Class
|
This May, Memphis Grizzlies Sam Young and Mike Conley visited Amro to attend a session of the store’s adult beginner
piano lessons. Their appearance represents
the one-of-a-kind fan experiences offered in January’s Grizz Gala silent
auction.

With
proceeds benefiting the Memphis Grizzlies House at St. Jude, the Grizz Gala welcomed
guests with a gourmet meal and an array of fantastic auction items. Among them was a scholarship to Recreational
Music Making piano lessons from Amro Music, a sponsor of the Grizzline
drummers. As part of the package,
players Sam Young and Mike Conley, both pianists, agreed to join the winning
bidder for a class. The night’s
high bidder, John Olsen, began class on May 17th. On May 24th, he was joined by point guard Conley at his side; Monday, June 7th, he'll be joined by small forward Young.
Described
by teammate Marcus Williams as “a challenge-taking guy,” Young, a 2009 draft,
will partner with #11 Conley to escort Mr. Olsen to one of eight lessons
in the program. Jason Bell, the course’s
instructor, notes, “Recreational Music Making is all about relaxation and
well-being for players, and it’s an honor for Amro to help support the
Grizzlies House, a cause devoted to the well-being of St. Jude patients and
their families.”
Bell is one
of Amro’s long-time piano instructors in the thriving Recreational Music Making
program.
Over 100 adult beginners have enrolled
in the specialized curriculum. Taught in
groups of 4 to 8, it encourages individuals to pursue music for enjoyment,
pleasure and stress-relief, without the pressure of performance and testing
associated with traditional music lessons.
“I don’t know how Mike and Sam learned,” Bell added, “but
they’re in my court now!”
